Racing has been a way of life for the Hinshaw family for over three generations. What began as a passion in the 1950s has grown into a family tradition built on hard work, determination, and a love for competition.
The Hinshaw Racing Legacy
The Hinshaw name has been associated with success on some of Indiana’s most historic short tracks for decades.
My grandfather, Dick Hinshaw, began his racing career in the 1950s and quickly established himself as one of the area’s top competitors. Throughout his career, he captured multiple Figure-8 Championships and numerous Track Championships at Anderson Speedway and Mt. Lawn Speedway. Among his many accomplishments was winning the prestigious National Crown event at Anderson Speedway, one of the most respected races in short track racing.
Following in his father’s footsteps, my father, Randy Hinshaw, continued the family tradition of excellence. Randy earned multiple Track Championships at both Anderson Speedway and Mt. Lawn Speedway while setting several track records throughout his career. In 1999, he finished Runner-Up in the iCAR Jasper Modified Championship, narrowly missing the title to teammate L.J. Lines. Like his father before him, Randy also claimed victory in the National Crown event at Anderson Speedway, further cementing the Hinshaw legacy in Indiana motorsports.
Today, Randy Hinshaw Racing proudly carries that tradition forward, representing generations of racers who have dedicated themselves to the pursuit of speed and success.
Biography
My passion for racing started at a very young age. Whether I was playing with Hot Wheels, collecting NASCAR toys, or racing neighborhood kids on foot and bicycles, competition was always part of who I was.
At eight years old, I officially began my racing career in Quarter Midgets at Mini Indy, located at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. My racing debut could not have gone much better—I started sixth and won my very first race. During my rookie season in the Senior Novice division, I won nearly every heat race, captured more than ten A-Main victories, and ultimately secured the Senior Novice Championship.
Toward the end of that season, I moved into the Heavy Honda division. While I remained competitive, I was racing against older and more experienced drivers, many between the ages of 11 and 16 while I was only 9 to 10 years old. My first Heavy Honda victory didn’t come until my second season, but the experience helped me grow tremendously as a driver.
Unfortunately, financial limitations forced us to sell my Quarter Midget after my second season. Racing was put on hold until I was 14 years old, when a family friend provided me with the opportunity to return behind the wheel. This time, I competed in the highly competitive Heavy 160 division. While victories were difficult to come by, I consistently ran near the front and earned several podium finishes against some of the toughest competition in the sport.
At 16 years old, I took on a new challenge by building my own Chevrolet Cavalier to compete in the Front Wheel Drive division at the Indianapolis Speedrome. I competed in only two events but showed immediate speed, finishing in the top five during my debut. In my second race, I was battling for the lead when the car was destroyed in an accident. Once again, financial limitations prevented me from repairing the car and continuing my racing career.
Today, I compete in the Indy Karting Challenge’s 206 Senior division at K1 Circuit in Whiteland, Indiana. Road racing has presented an entirely new challenge and requires a very different skill set than the oval racing I grew up around. While the learning curve has been steep, I’ve been fortunate to find success early in the season and continue developing as a driver with every lap.
As I continue my racing journey, I carry with me the lessons, values, and competitive spirit passed down through generations of the Hinshaw family. Randy Hinshaw Racing represents more than just a race team—it represents a family legacy built on perseverance, passion, and the pursuit of excellence.
